"The Largest Flashmob Installation" to Celebrate the 120th Anniversary of the Soviet Test Pilot Valery Chkalov
The Chkalov Stairs in Nizhny Novgorod witnessed an amazing flash mob to mark the anniversary of Valery Chkalov on February 1. A gathering of 1,027 people was included in the Book of Russian Records as "The Largest Flashmob Installation." A mapping and light show by dreamlaser was a key part of the event.
The performance aimed to visually recreate the world's first non-stop flight from Moscow to Vancouver via the North Pole made by Valery Chkalov and his crew in 1937.
The mapping surface included the Chkalov Stairs from the bottom step to the viewpoint where the stairs assume the shape resembling the symbol of infinity. The projection showed the route of the legendary flight and other images, including the propeller of the ANT-25 airplane and the Earth. The flash mobbers passed a physical model of the airplane up the stairs so it seemed to fly, leaving a train of fabric, which was lit pixel by pixel with LED bars.
The mapping show culminated with the aviator's quote: "Being means being the first". The monument to Chkalov was illuminated with architectural lighting, while the participants lit their lanterns.
To make up the show we used 10 Christie M4R25 RGB pure laser multimedia projectors, 84 Aqua Beam LIGHT SKY light heads, 80 LED bars, and 12 architectural lighting devices.
The mapping and lighting were controlled from a 12-meter high Layher tower installed on the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment.
The flashmob installation was organized in partnership with Center 800 with the support of the Chkalov International Memorial Foundation, Chkalov non-profit organization, Vysota Youth Center, Volunteers 800, and Volunteers of Victory
