As part of the Winter in Moscow project, the City of Light festival is to run in the Russian capital from December 20, 2024 to January 20, 2025. The project is conceived and managed by the National Events Agency.
Dreamlaser has created unique content for five locations and is providing technical support for all ten sites in the center of Moscow. The mapping and video content bring to life fairy-tale characters on the façades of famous architectural landmarks in the city center.
A lot more than a mere projection, each location offers an elaborate story that brings the characters to life while its details are diligently incorporated into the unique features of architectural landmarks. Soviet postcards have lent the festival their vibe and its style takes the Russian viewer back to their favourite fairy tale characters. All the locations are connected by routes as an invitation to the city residents and visitors to take a dreamlike journey through magical winter Moscow.
This massive project required 2,000 hours of work by the dreamlaser team's studio designers, with 43 animated characters and 610 animation layers created, while the content was developed and created by 45 people of the production team.
Dreamlaser's content can be found in the following locations:
Big Storybook: Bldg 3, 36 New Arbat Ave. (Sfera Shopping Mall)
The pages of favourite fairy tales come to life on the building's façade. Video projections on the façades of the book-shaped building are styled as shelf backs of storybooks. The images of fairy tale characters on the opposite buildings complement each other to form a single composition. Each shelf back displays animated elements of the fairy tale images converging into a holistic picture. You will see images from such fairy tales as The Snow Queen, Morozko [Father Frost], The Mistress of the Copper Mountain or The Malachite Maid, The Twelve Months, The Grey Neck and others.
Cosmic New Year: 5 Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya St. (Planetarium)
The surface of the dome will show viewers a space journey with Father Frost. A wizard will fly a rocket, lighting up the space with words 'Happy New Year!', race around a ring of Saturn driving a trio of horses and plant a New Year's flag on the Moon.
Windows to a Fairy Tale can be enjoyed at two addresses: Bldg 1, 13/9 Kuznetsky Most St. (Tretyakov rental building) and Bldg 1, 10 Stoleshnikov Lane.
At the first address, each window will display a different story: a New Year's ice rink in the forest where Snegurochka [Snow Maiden] skates with a Snowman, fluffy squirrels decorate the New Year's tree nearby, and animals will play music with an orchestra. A unique light show will enchant viewers, immersing them in a perfect fairy tale that is coming to life on the streets of Moscow. And in the windows of Stoleshnikov Lane, visitors will see a magical conveyor belt moving in a gift-wrapping factory, Father Frost and Vodyanoy [Water Spirit] fishing, the oak tree from fabled Lukomorye and the Firebird flying.
Ice Castle: 45 Bolshaya Polyanka St. (Bashmet Center)
As dusk is falling, the building will be covered with ice and snow patterns using video mapping technology, taking on the shapes and contours of the Snow Queen's castle. You will see the mistress of the castle herself as well as Kai and Gerda, and witness scenes from this famous fairy tale.
